I have recently moved to Northern California. Does anyone have a recommendation for me? I am in San Francisco quite often, but am open to driving to someone who really knows about this syndrome.

Read this!!
I found this doctor through Dr. Brugada. This doctor and Dr. Brugada are friends. Acutally, they are more than friends. Dr. Subramaniam Krishnan was Dr. Brugada's mentor (if I'm not mistaken). He is in the Orange County area of California, which is an hour south of Los Angeles. I went to him and got a full consult for Brugada Syndrome. Very helpful and will give you a full comprehensive consult. Google him with this information:

Subramaniam Krishnan, M.D.
Cardiac Electrophysiologist
UC Irvine Healthcare

I personally have been diagnosed with Brugada syndrom the hard way, having a cardiac arrest and fell into a coma. I have an ICD now and have had many arrhythmia storms already. The ICD have saved my life many times. My personal cardiologist is great. He is also in Orange County. The difference from Dr. Krishnan is that my doctor is a private practice. The way they run things in private practice compared to an University practice is very different. If there was a cure (other than ICD) for our condition, I would go to that doctor, but there is no cure that we know of. This is the doctor that I go to regularly. His office is right next door to Mission Viejo Hospital. Very convenient. He is great and honest about what possible treatments we can try.

Minnesota: Twin Cities

Dr. Parvin Dorostkar

University of Minnesota- University of Minnesota Amplatz Children's Hospital
Pediatric Specialty Clinic
Phillips Wangensteen Building
516 Delaware St SE rm# 4-100
Mpls, MN 55455

Dr. Dorostkar is great. This is the first time I feel as though we have been listened to and that we were important. We were not rushed at all. She took 3 hours with us. Wrote out a family tree, wrote down all symptoms, and actually involved my daughter in the appointment. What I mean by that is we just didn't talk about what was going on with my daughter we talked with my daughter about what symptoms she is having. Just a great doctor.
My daughter had to stay the night after her EP Study and I was so impressed with the care I would give them 5 out of 5 stars. The Nurses were so wonderful !!! They made us feel right at home.

Dr. Margaret Lloyd, Specialist
Mayo Clinic
Rochester, MN

Dr. D.Wilcox F.P.
MeritCare Clinic
Bemidj, MN

Both these Dr.'s are great. Always check with any Dr. you see about their knowledge of Brugada, you may have to keep looking! It took me many years of trips to the E.R. and being sent home before one Dr. with Brugada knowledge diagnosed me correctly, I've had my ICD since May 2008.

coolmp - my deepest sympathies on the loss of your wife. I don't know where you are in New Jersey, but I am in PA and went to Penn State Hershey Medical Center, Dr. Mario Gonzalez. I overheard a nurse telling another patient that people come from all over the country to see him. I don't know if that would be too far for you, but maybe you could call and get a referral closer to where you live. E-mail me and I'd be glad to give you the number.

Also, Did you try to e-mail Dr. Brugada? You can find his e-mail on the site. Maybe he could give you some insight as to where to go.

Thanks Melissa.
We are still in shock as it happened so fast. I am still waiting for her to open that door and walk-in the house. I am hoping that this is really long nightmare and will be over soon. We are all devastated and trying to comprehend what just happened.

I live in Central Jersey across from Philadelphia City. Penn State does have large campus in Central City Philadelphia. I could inquire there as well. I have already made an appointment at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (in one of their NJ location) for full cardiac evaluation and EKG for my boys (17 and 9).
I have not emailed Dr. Brugada yet. I will do that once I can put together some courage. Also I will gather some docs that I can email him as well. We have had an autopsy done however they do not have budget to do genetic testing for Brugada (and/or LQTS) on my wife! We are already struggling emotionally and this was another big blow. She was perfectly healthy woman other than this big unknown.

I can take all the prayers for us that anyone can offer.

Thanks again.

coolmp - from what I understand, Dr. Brugada will do genetic testing without charge, but I hear it takes a long time to get the results (possibly up to a year).

I also found a website for Masonic Medical Research Laboratory in Utica, NY that will do testing for free, but I haven't gone that route yet. I only found out I have Brugada in September. I just sent all my insurance information to Familion for genetic testing, and am waiting to hear what my insurance company will pay.

My doctor warned me, though, that they only find the BrS gene in about 20% of the people that they do genetic testing on. He said if they don't isolate the gene in me, then there's no use testing my kids. Just to keep having them evaluated every year. :(

I'm truly sorry, I just can't imagine your pain, and the fear you feel for your kids not knowing. My kids are 16, 15 and 10, and I worry every day that I passed this on to them.

Does anyone have a list of specialists in New York City ? I was diagnosed by a callous cardiologist two weeks ago, on the basis of an EKG. He terrified me, telling me he'd only seen two patients with this condition and the other had died suddenly. I am really scared and need to find someone who knows more.

Hi Alaun,
So sorry to hear about your experience. You are probably far from the Cleveland Clinic, but maybe you can call them to find a doctor referral near you. They were my second opinion. They see patients monthly with Brugada. Hope this is helpful. Best wishes.

Your situation is definitely terrifying and one that many of us have experienced. I won't tell you to try to remain calm, I know it's impossible, but remember that we've been exactly where you are now and we're still alive! First of all, you need an electrophysiologist, not a regular cardiologist. A good place to start is to check with a cardiology clinic at a children's hospital. They deal with rare genetic heart conditions more often than adult EPs and may be able to recommend someone. You can email Dr. Brugada, , he may know someone in NYC. Talk to EVERYONE about heart doctors and electrophysiologists. Even if someone doesn't have BrS or something rare, they may have an EP that they love. Good luck and be sure to let us know how everything is going.

That would be possible for listing doctors whom we have tested to be good. Anyway, it could be better if there is a specific page that we could put our listing. This will make searcher's job easy in finding the desired doctor.
